Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg participated in a question and answer session with college students on Tsinghua University in Beijing. In Mandarin. He showed some impressive improvement in learning this language, and entertained everyone with conducting the entire session in Chinese. After being asked why does he speaks Chinese, he explained that his wife is a Chinese, he likes the Chinese culture and he really likes challenges. And what’s the bigger challenge then learning Chinese?
Although Facebook has been banned in China since 2009, China is a country that every Internet company desperately wants a presence in. Zuckerberg started to build his presence at least by learning the language. With this interview, he earned a lot of sympathies in China, and even though his Mandarin is heavily accented and not even close to perfect, it was clearly intelligible. Pretty brave. Way to go, Mark!
